Franz Josef is the cheapest place in this guide to land on a glacier, and the geography explains why: the ice comes down to 300 metres above sea level within twenty kilometres of the sea, so the aircraft is over the icefall within minutes of leaving the village. Flights run from a twenty-minute snow landing at $212 to four-glacier routes with two landings, and the heli-hike puts you on the ice with crampons for two and a half hours. Every flight compared below rates 4.7 or better.
The West Coast receives several metres of rain a year and the icefall clouds over faster than the village does. Franz Josef operators cancel flights constantly, refund them in full and rebook when a gap appears — often the same day, because they fly many departures. The mistake travellers make is booking the flight for their last morning before driving on. Put it on the first day you arrive and treat every later day as a spare.

from $361 A twenty-minute flight with a snow landing is $212 — the lowest glacier-landing fare in this guide by a wide margin. Longer routes add glaciers and landings; the heli-hike adds two and a half hours on the ice with equipment and a guide.
Twenty minutes up the icefall to a snowfield landing above the glacier, and back. The standard product here.
Thirty-five to forty minutes covering Franz Josef and Fox, sometimes with Mount Cook and Tasman on the far side of the divide.
Either two and a half hours walking on the ice with crampons and a guide, or the longest scenic route with two landings.
One, two, three or four — the fare rises with each. Franz Josef and Fox are ten kilometres apart, so the twin-glacier upgrade is cheap in flying terms.
A snow landing is ten to fifteen minutes beside the aircraft. A heli-hike is a guided walk on the glacier itself with crampons, and it costs twice as much.
The West Coast is one of the wettest places in New Zealand. Flights are cancelled regularly and refunded — that is normal here, not exceptional.
Franz Josef and Fox Glacier are 25 kilometres apart and both sell flights over both glaciers. Book the one you are sleeping in.
